Burns and scalds are damages to the skin caused by exposure to extreme heat. The injuries may have lifelong serious effects on victims and on their families. The effects can be ameliorated by reconstructive surgery, high quality rehabilitation, and other similar therapies.
According to British Burn Association, burn injuries are experienced by approximately 250,000 people in the UK each year. Over 90% of these injuries are preventable.
Causes of Burns and Scalds
The main causes leading to burns or scalds include:
- Extreme temperatures: extreme heat (including contact with flames, steam, hot liquids or hot objects) or extreme cold (such as frost bite)
- Electrical burns: electric shocks caused by faulty equipment; Radiation burns (when exposed to Ultra Violet light). In this type of situations, the use of protective gear is recommended
- Hazardous caustic or corrosive chemical substances.
